Spring Break: The One With Snow!

Last Friday morning we went grocery shopping in preparation for Rachel coming home from college for spring break. Jeremiah and Bethany went with us. It was so funny, as soon as we entered Walmart, Bethany made a beeline for the electronics department. Malcolm asked her where she was going. She told him that she was going to look at the DVD’s!!! We were shocked that she would even remember where they were. We both thought what a typical thing that was for a teenager to do…Check out the DVD’s!! So what if she was looking for Dora the Explorer and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse DVD’s, at least she wasn’t looking for Barney!!! It is so amazing to witness her slow but steady emergence out of the epileptic fog that had suppressed her thoughts and personality for twelve years!

Later that night she went without me on the two hour drive to pick up Rachel and The Boy from College! This was only the second time in fourteen years that she went somewhere without me! I can’t express how great it felt to have that much time to myself at home! Jeremiah had wanted me to play Pokemon with him, but changed his mind after he became involved in a rousing online game of Minecraft with his online buddies! I was secretly kind of glad! I worked online for awhile and then watched, “Call the Midwife” on Netflix until they all came back home!

Another nearly unbelievable new thing Bethany is doing now is answering the phone appropriately. I was floored when the other day She told Rebekah’s friend that Rebekah wasn’t home now because she was out babysitting!! Up to that point she would answer the phone but not say anything and silently give it to me. Usually by the time I had the phone in my hand whoever it was that called had hung up already!

On Sunday, Beth agreed to go out in the snow to help Dad build a snowman. She even took Rachel up on her offer to go sledding with her and Jerry. She hates snow!! She has NEVER wanted to go out in the snow EVER! She only went down the hill once but still, She actually tried something new! She’s expanding her horizons!

I have not mentioned anything about Rebekah because she was not at home all weekend. She spent most of her waking hours at The Boy’s house!

Malcolm spent Sunday afternoon getting his planting shelves ready for seedlings.

Jeremiah brought home a treasure from church. We tested it out Sunday night. See it on the video below!

  1. Way to go Bethany! That is way too many milestones for a week. You get not only the gold medal but the wishes of your mom to come true. Enjoy your time with Rachel :)

  2. Oh, how nice you got a small break Sylvia. I bet you didn’t know what to do with yourself at first? How exciting that Bethany is improving and remembered where the DVD’s were.
