My Autistic Brain Tumor Survivor

Outdoor Play Toys for Kids of all Ages and Abilities

Last year, we were blessed to spend Memorial Day with several of our children at a beautiful park.

We were even more blessed when Bethany, our resident “indoorsy” girl decided to get out of the car and join in on the festivities.

However, her interest didn’t last long.

Perhaps we should have prepared for this outing better by bringing along some fun outdoor play toys to keep her occupied, engaged, and happy!

Bethany’s conversation skills are minimal, so hanging around chit chatting is not her favorite thing to do!

She has never really enjoyed being away from the safety and comfort of home for very long, either, because she has an unpredictable seizure disorder and fatigues easily.

So, she’s understandably a bit of a couch potato!

Perhaps I could have prepared her for our picnic by using these Nature and Outdoors flash cards to make up a social story and have a conversation with her about what she could expect to happen during our time outside!

I honestly couldn’t help but think that if we had brought along some exciting new games or outdoor play toys for all the kids to enjoy playing with together, we might have been able to entice Bethany to stick around and enjoy her time outdoors with our family just a little bit longer.

After arriving back home, I asked Bethany to help me look on the computer for some cool outdoor play toys and games that she thought she might enjoy playing with the next time we planned an outdoor get together with friends and family!

Hopefully, I’ll be able to purchase an item or two before the next time we plan a family BBQ and she just might be more likely to stay and play a little bit longer!

Here are Bethany’s picks of fun, outdoor play toys!

EZ Grip Ball– These sturdy inflatable balls are covered in a unique durable rubber webbing which makes it easier for individuals with special needs to successfully catch them! Great for working on gross motor skills, and eye-hand coordination, and FUN!!!

Zip Ball>-Now here’s a ball that’ll never get away from your kids, so you won’t have to go chasing it around the yard!! Two kids work their upper bodies to get the ball “zipping” back and forth to each other!

Bungee Jumper Kids will have the sensory time of their lives jumping around on this squishy, springy, and slip resistant foam base while holding onto the tethered handle! Perfect for solo fun or buy a few and set kids up for the most fun race they’ll ever have!

Parachute games are sure to be a huge hit with kids of all ages and abilities. Kids will have a blast working on gross motor skills and upper body building. Their social skills will also get a workout! Combine with music and you’ll be all set for a music and movement activity! click the following link for fun, fantastic parachute game ideas!
